Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) and Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) at Our School

    Our Approach

At Little Common School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is central to our vision that every child belongs, achieves and thrives. Through PSHE, children learn how to build positive relationships, stay safe, understand themselves and others, and develop the confidence and resilience they need to navigate an increasingly complex world. Our school values — Considerate, Creative, Confident, Ambitious, Resilient and Healthy — underpin everything we teach.

We deliver PSHE through the Jigsaw PSHE Programme (2026 edition), a whole‑school, carefully sequenced curriculum that brings learning to life with stories, characters, mindfulness and structured discussion. Children take part in weekly lessons that are calm, purposeful and age‑appropriate, helping them explore ideas in a safe and supportive environment.

    What Children Learn

PSHE at Little Common is taught through six themes (“Puzzles”), repeated each year with increasing depth:

    • Being Me in My World – belonging, identity, rights and responsibilities
    • Celebrating Difference – equality, diversity, empathy and anti‑bullying
    • Dreams and Goals – aspirations, resilience, teamwork and personal achievement
    • Healthy Me – physical and emotional health, safety and positive choices
    • Relationships – friendships, families, emotions, personal boundaries and seeking help
    • Changing Me – growing up, managing change, body confidence, puberty and reproduction (where age‑appropriate)

This spiral structure ensures learning is always matched to children’s developmental stage.

Children are encouraged to ask questions, and teachers respond sensitively, honestly and in ways that match the age and maturity of the class.

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)

Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory for all primary-age pupils. These subjects include learning about:

    • Families and friendships
    • Respectful and healthy relationships
    • Online behaviour and safety
    • Mental and physical wellbeing
    • Personal boundaries and privacy
    • Puberty and growing bodies

Where learning includes more sensitive content — such as puberty or human reproduction in Upper Key Stage 2 — this is taught age‑appropriately and in small, well‑guided steps. Our teaching is factual, reassuring and rooted in safeguarding, kindness and respect.

Sex education (learning about human reproduction) is taught only in Years 5 and 6, and parents are informed in advance. Parents may request withdrawal from these specific non‑statutory lessons.

    Working in Partnership with Parents

We know how important it is for families to feel informed, involved and confident about what their children are learning.

    • Parents are notified in advance of units that cover puberty or reproduction.
    • Families are welcome to view materials or speak with staff to ask questions.
    • Additional parent guides for the Relationships and Changing Me units are shared each summer term.
    • Teachers and leaders are always available to discuss the curriculum or provide reassurance.

Our aim is simple: a transparent, age‑appropriate curriculum that supports every child’s wellbeing and personal development while working in positive partnership with families.
