Starting School – What to Expect

Starting school is an exciting milestone, and we work carefully to ensure that children feel safe, settled and ready to begin their learning journey with us.

We recognise that every child responds differently to this transition. Some will come in confidently from the first day, while others may take a little longer. Both are entirely normal, and we will support each child at the pace they need.

First Days
During the first few days, children will be welcomed into their classrooms and gently introduced to routines and expectations. Our priority is to help them feel happy, secure and confident in their new environment.

Drop-off and Collection
There will always be familiar adults available at the start and end of the day to greet children and support a positive start. We encourage clear, calm goodbyes to help children settle quickly.

Settling In
It is completely normal for children to take time to settle into school life. Our staff are experienced in supporting this and will work closely with you if your child needs a little extra reassurance or time.

Working Together
Starting school works best when there is strong communication between home and school. Please do talk to us if you have any worries or questions — we are here to help and will always work with you to ensure your child feels happy and secure.

The School Day

Our Reception day is carefully structured to provide a balance of routine, learning and play. This helps children to feel secure while giving them the opportunity to explore, develop and build confidence.

A Typical Day
While each day will vary slightly, children quickly become familiar with the rhythm of the school day. This includes a calm start, focused learning time, opportunities for play and exploration, and time to come together for stories and reflection.

Learning Through Play
Much of the Reception day is based around purposeful play. Children learn through a mix of adult-led activities and opportunities to explore their own interests, both inside and outside the classroom.

Outdoor Learning
Regular access to outdoor provision is an important part of the day. This supports children’s physical development, independence and confidence, as well as providing further opportunities for learning.

Lunchtime
Lunchtime is a positive and social part of the day. Staff support children in managing routines independently while ensuring they feel comfortable and settled.

Learning in Reception

In Reception, children learn through a balance of structured teaching and purposeful play. Our approach is designed to build confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning.

Early Reading and Phonics
Children begin learning to read from the start of the year through daily phonics sessions. This supports them in recognising sounds, blending words and developing early reading skills.

Mathematical Development
Children develop their understanding of number through a range of practical and engaging activities. This includes counting, recognising patterns and beginning to solve simple problems.

Communication and Language
We place a strong emphasis on developing children’s speaking and listening skills. This supports their learning across all areas of the curriculum and helps them to express themselves confidently.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Supporting children to feel happy, secure and confident is at the heart of what we do. We help children to develop positive relationships, independence and resilience as they settle into school life.

Practical Information

We recognise that clear and simple routines help children to settle quickly. The information below covers day-to-day practicalities to support a smooth start to school.

Uniform
Children wear a simple and practical uniform which helps them to feel part of the school community.

Full details, including items and suppliers, can be found here → Uniform Information

PE and Clothing
Children should come to school dressed appropriately for active play both indoors and outdoors.

  • Comfortable footwear is important
  • Coats should be brought daily, as we use outdoor spaces in most weather

Lunch
Children may bring a packed lunch or have a school meal.

  • All lunches should be clearly named
  • We promote healthy choices and a positive, social lunchtime experience

Further details about menus and arrangements will be shared before your child starts.

Water Bottles
Children should bring a named water bottle to school each day.

  • This should contain water only
  • Bottles will be kept in the classroom and accessible throughout the day

Naming Belongings
Please ensure that all clothing and belongings are clearly named.

This supports children in becoming more independent and helps us to return any lost items quickly.

Communication with School

Clear and open communication between home and school is very important to us. We want parents to feel informed, supported and confident that any questions or concerns will be dealt with promptly.

The School Office
The school office is the first point of contact for most queries.

  • Messages can be passed on to class teachers where needed
  • The office team will respond or direct your enquiry appropriately

Speaking to Staff
Class teachers are always happy to speak with parents at appropriate times.

  • Brief messages can be shared at the beginning or end of the day
  • Longer conversations can be arranged if needed

Keeping Us Informed
Please let us know about anything that may affect your child’s day.

  • Changes to collection arrangements should be communicated clearly
  • It is helpful to include dates and key details where relevant

Working Together
We believe that positive communication supports children’s wellbeing and progress. If you have any questions or concerns, please do get in touch — we are here to help.
